ARE YOU READY FOR THE LANDMARKS UNDERNEATH THE CITY?
It is hard to imagine what is happening under your daily walk to work. An underground Urbex tour will dramatically expand your perspective of how a city can look underneath. Drainage tunnels, rivers, chambers or defense bunkers are waiting to be explored by you.
As a highlight you will enter a forgotten civil defense bunker where you will find artefacts and equipment untouched since the Cold War era. Together with your group you will learn about how the city drainage tunnel system works, you will learn that there is life underneath – fauna and flora. At first hand you can see what it is like to hide in a civil defense bunker, and also how long you can stay in a bunker or a bomb shelter, what you would drink or eat.
This underground Urbex Tour is conducted by a professional team with maximum safety measurements and equipment (rubber boots, gloves, helmet, flashlight). This is a once in a lifetime experience, which will make you look at the city and it’s streets completely differently. You will find no comparable underground tour anywhere in the world.
BACK ON THE FRONTLINE OF WORLD WAR ll
Kyiv’s south frontline was supposed to stop Nazi troops on their way to conquer the Soviet Union. Huge machine gun bunkers with underground connections were built within just few months in 1941 and became the site of one of the bloodiest battles between the Soviets and Nazis during World War ll, and where the Red Army was defeated. The Nazis then occupied Kyiv and moved on Moscow.
The bunkers you will visit were not enough to stop the well-equipped German army with panzer tanks. Bullet holes, monuments, and collapsed parts of tunnels are witnesses of the sad history of the defeat of Kyiv’s defence. Walking through machine gun bunkers one of which has a museum, together with listening to stories from the war will give you goose bumps as you imagine how you would feel and act under those circumstances.
READY FOR THE HITLER, HIMMLER AND GÖRING HEADQUARTERS STORY?
There is no other place where you can visit the past military bases of the three most powerful Nazis in one day. Vinica and Zhitomir with their World War museums will reveal the unknown stories of Germany when fighting the Soviet Union.
Accompanied by a DISCOVER CHERNOBYL historian you will learn about myths and truths of the places and events that led to firstly, beating the Soviets, and at the end, flushing the Nazis out. This one day excursion out of Kyiv will be the most in depth experience of the World War Eastern Front in Europe, where you will understand in context the decisions, strategies and tactics of Nazis in their fight on the Soviets.
When visiting the sites, museums with the large military vehicles and tanks collection you will travel back in time to a dark age of history in Europe.
THE SECRET OF STALIN’S WAR STRATEGY
Preparing the Soviet Union for the World War in the 30’s, General Secretary Josif Vissarionovich Stalin and his advisers decided that supply via trains would be the safest option, under the river of Dnipro. With great technologies (some of them brought from the USA or UK) a gigantic construction underground was about to be built. However, the costs, together with the war starting for the Soviet Union in 1941, made it impossible to finish the tunnels in order for them to help the Red Army defend Kyiv.
Then, after the Nazi occupation, the Germans decided to continue the construction of these tunnels. And again, after setting Kyiv free, the work continued. However, shortly after the war, the construction finally stopped because of the change of the war doctrine; nuclear missiles.
YOU ARE THE ONE WHO CAN BRING THIS WORLD TO AN END!
It is the year 1971, the Cold War; the Soviet Union is building strategic missile bases all over the territory of the republics of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. All bases are equipped with dozens of nuclear warheads. Many of these missile troops are still in operation and you will visit the only one that is open to the public. The Museum of Strategic Missile Troops, founded in 2001 near the Ukrainian city of Pervomaysk (south of Kyiv) is a missile base completely equipped as though it is in use.
The 3 hour excursion around the missile base makes you think, how close the world was to destroying itself. The Soviet prime minister was able to launch four of the most powerful rockets from the Moscow area with a push of one button. Automatically, missiles from all over the whole USSR could have been launched on the pre-set targets.
When people left planet Earth…
There is no other place in the world where you can truly ‘feel’ the space exploration by mankind other than Baikonur in Kazakhstan. It is the world’s first and largest cosmodrome built by the Soviets in the 1950’s. Sputnik, the world’s first satellite was launched from this cosmodrome in 1957, followed by the first human space flight with astronaut Yuri Gagarin onboard the ‘Vostok’ space shuttle on April 12th, 1961. Since then over 1,200 space rockets were launched into the cosmos from this base and it currently has a busy schedule, as it is managed by the Russian space agency Roscosmos (that leases a territory almost 7000 sq. kilometres from Kazakhstan) until 2050. Almost every month there is a space shuttle launch which you can be a part of!
